Asbestos kills around 5000 workers each year and around 20 tradesmen die each week as a result of past exposure. Although asbestos is no longer used as a building material, it is still present today in buildings built or refurbished before the year 2000. When disturbed or damaged, asbestos fibres are released into the air. When these fibres are inhaled they cause serious diseases such as Mesothelioma, Asbestos-related lung cancer, Asbestosis or Pleural thickening. Due to the severity of these diseases, asbestos is highly dangerous. Using warning signs to forewarn trades people of asbestos ensures that employees and members of the public can avoid the area or protect themselves from harm.
