A caustic substance is a chemical (particularly alkalis) with the ability to burn or corrode through materials. Many substances are caustic such as Sodium Hydroxide, Potassium Hydroxide or Calcium Oxide. If a caustic substance comes in contact with skin or eyes the damage can be irreversible or even fatal. Highlighting that there are caustic substances in certain areas is an effective way to advise and forewarn of the potential dangers.
